Business Medical Specialist (AAS)


Program Information

This program prepares you to become a key member of a medical office team, supporting medical staff and playing a key role in the successful operation of a physician’s office, health care facility or medical clinic. You will be able to perform specialized data entry, classification and record-keeping procedures related to medical diagnostics, treatment, billing, and insurance documentation. Pursue a Business Medical Specialist Associate’s Degree by taking classes including Microsoft Applications, Medical Terminology, Legal and Ethical Issues in Health Care, Business Communications, and have the opportunity to obtain Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certifications.

Students in the Business Medical Specialist or Physician Coding program are eligible for our 2+2 transfer articulation agreement with Wichita State University (WSU). The purpose of this agreement is to provide Butler Community College (BCC) students with a four-year coordinated program where students receive an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree from BCC and a Bachelor of Health Management from WSU. Completion Requirements

All students who have not taken the ACT or SAT within the last 3 years or have had no previous college English or math courses are required to take a placement test prior to enrolling in English or mathematics courses. To receive this degree or certificate, a student must:

  1. Attain a grade of C or higher in each required course.
  2. Attain a minimum overall grade point average of 2.0 (C)
  3. Complete at least one semester of internship.
