Certified Physician Coder

Program Information

The Certified Professional Coder (CPC) credential demonstrates expertise in coding medical services and procedures performed by physicians. This includes coding patient symptoms and diagnoses, as well as diagnostic tests. 

Butler Community College is committed to flexible pathways for our students’ success. Courses are offered in varying delivery formats; face-to-face, blended and online. When reviewing this pathway, please check the Class Schedule to identify which format the course is offered to make sure you are selecting the delivery modality that fits your needs.

Prerequisite Information

If a student has a strong professional medical background, he/she can take the seven credit hours for this certificate. Prior approval is required. Students who possess any of the following may be eligible.

  • Verified one-year coding experience.
  • Completion of or currently enrolled in a relevant baccalaureate or post-baccalaureate program.  
  • Licensure in a medical field such as CNA, CMA, LPN, RN

Completion Requirements

To receive this certification, a student must:

  • Attain a grade of C or higher in each required course.
  • Sit for the CPC exam.

Additional Costs

A medical coding lab fee is assessed to cover the AAPC membership dues and national examination fees.

Certification Information

To become a certified coder, the applicant must have passed the national certification exam.
